Evolusi android dari Cupcake -- Jelly Bean

Akuisisi Android oleh Google pada tahun 2005 menandai masuknya Google ke pasar smartphone. Saat ini, Android ada di lebih dari 331 juta smartphone dengan hampir satu juta orang pengguna android baru setiap hari. Popularitas Android didukung oleh banyaknya aplikasi yang bagus yang bisa didapat dari Google Play. Android app store mempunyai 600.000 aplikasi lebih sejauh ini.

Android berjalan pada lebih dari 250 perangkat, termasuk tablet dan smartphone yang diproduksi oleh 23 produsen yang berbeda, dan telah melewati lebih dari sepuluh update OS Android 1.0 dari (Astro) sampai sekarang yang terbaru, Android 4.1  atau disebut Jelly Bean yang baru dirilis pada bulan Juni tahun ini.

Android 1.0 Astro

Android 1.0 diluncurkan pada September 2008, dengan fitur yang berorientasi untuk tujuan bisnis dan pekerjaan.

Versi ini dikemas dengan aplikasi yang mendukung layanan Internet dan aplikasi internet-based seperti: dukungan HTML penuh , browser video dengan aplikasi YouTube, dan layanan Google seperti GTalk, Gmail, Google Maps, dan Google Sync.

Android versi pertama ini adalah yang pertama yang menerapkan notification yang bisa ditarik kebawah. Pengguna juga banyak yang baru belajar menggunakan app dari Play store. Pada saat itu app di android market belum sebanyak sekarang.

Android Versi pertama ini terutama difokuskan pada sisi bisnis , Sedangkan fitur hiburan masih kurang. Belum ada dukungan untuk pemutaran video dalam default media player nya.

Android 1.5 (Cupcake)

Cupcake adalah rilis utama kedua Android, Android versi Ini diperkenalkan bersamaan dengan ponsel Android pertama touchscreen: HTC Magic.

Widgets mulai diperkenalkan. Google mulai memungkinkan developer pihak ketiga untuk menghasilkan widget untuk penggunaan Android. Cupcake juga memungkinkan fitur copy-dan-paste.
Rekaman video dapat  dibuat dalam format MP4 dan 3GP. Pada versi ini juga ditambahkan fitur auto rotate

Pengguna juga sudah bisa meng upload video dan foto ke Youtube atau Picasa.
